Matthew Tkachuk took the Stanley Cup for a swim after the Florida Panthers made history in 2024, and now he's opened up on the rule breaking moment.
The 2023/24 season was an amazing one for the NHL, and after a dramatic seven game series against the Edmonton Oilers, they won their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. The celebrations went on for some time down in Florida, with many noteworthy moments, but the biggest of all was when Matthew Tkachuk took the historic trophy for a swim in the ocean.
Now Tkachuk has learned that it was against the rules to take the Cup into the ocean, addressing the incredible day.
«I did not know that wasn't allowed, I promise you,» Tkachuk told KSDK News. «It was the day after I won, I still hadn't slept at that point, and it was just me and a few of my teammates. We had nobody with us to say, Matthew, don't be an idiot. Don't do that.' So I thought it was fitting, but if I would have known I wasn't supposed to do it, I wouldn't have done it, but also, I think it's pretty funny.»
After learning that it wasn't allowed, he finally gave credit to the person that pushed him to do so, revealing it was his brother Brady, who was seemingly upset that he didn't get credit at the time.
«My brother was like, The ocean's right there, why don't you just go take it in there right now,'» Matthew explained. «I'm like, That's a great idea. We'll go do that.' I guess I didn't give him credit when I first got asked about it, and he was pretty upset with me, so there, he gets the credit for that.»
With the Panthers expecting to do battle for the Cup again in 2024/25, Tkachuk will know better for next time, but this time it's highly unlikely that he or anyone will take it for a swim again.
