Australian Olympic field hockey player Matt Dawson had to amputate his finger after recently breaking it.

The 2024 Paris Olympic games are right around the corner, and a devastating injury to Australia's Matt Dawson just days before the start of the games has now jeopardized his chances of taking part in these games for his country.

Dawson was the recipient of a silver medal during the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Not wanting to risk missing out at this year's games, he made the scary decision to have a portion of his finger amputated, in order to recover quicker.

«I made an informed decision with the plastic surgeon, not only for the opportunity to play in Paris but for life after as well,» Dawson told 7NEWS, per Olympics.com.

Dawson is remaining optimistic and really hopes to heal in time for the start of the games in a few days. His coach, Colin Batch, has nothing but praise for Dawson, saying he's an extremely committed athlete and said if he were in that position, he would have likely not wanted to remove a portion of his finger for eternity.

«It's a bit of a change and an exciting challenge,» said Dawson

Australia has a very good chance at winning Gold at this year's Olympics, and no doubt Dawson's teammates are going to be extra motivated to win it all after seeing everything he's done and the amount of passion he has to be part of the squad.
