Jack Hughes is one of the most talented young players in the NHL, but on Thursday the Devils forward made a fool of himself as he tried to protect the empty net.

The New Jersey Devils started 2024/25 red-hot, but they've slowed down significantly in recent times, entering Thursday night's action with a 5-3-1 record on the back of three losses in their last four games. Now, they've fallen to the Detroit Red Wings, and while there are plenty of issues for them to deal with, one moment at the end of the game stood out.

While trying to hustle back and stop a wide-open empty netter by Detroit's Michael Rasmussen, young superstar Jack Hughes tried to lay the boom. Unfortunately, it just didn't work out in his favor.

In the process of trying to get physical with the former first-round draft pick, Hughes ended up straight on the ice, with Rasmussen burying the empty net goal to seal Detroit's 5-3 victory on the night.

Despite having all the momentum and speed behind him, Hughes came off second best in a hurry, ending a poor night for the Devils that saw them drop their third straight game. In the simple process of scoring the goal, Rasmussen stared down the young Devils star, and unsurprisingly, it wasn't taken too well by his teammates, as a scuffle ensued after the play with very little action taken.

In a young career full of incredible highlights already, this definitely isn't one that Hughes will want to see again, but at the end of the day things like this just happen in hockey, and it's a play that won't bother Hughes too much.
