With the four-nations tournament happening this season, each country is beginning to select its rosters in anticipation of the event. Furthermore, they need to establish leadership groups for their teams as they will have the extra important task of representing their country on the international stage. Many fans likely will not be as excited for this event as they would be for the Olympics, but at least it's something. The event is set to take place in February, with a break built into the NHL schedule that month. As it creeps closer, players around the league are starting to comment on it. Just today, Connor McDavid was asked who he thinks should be captain for Team Canada and his answer was rather succinct.
Notably, we did get our first look at the jerseys for the event today with each country sporting a new design. Of the four, team Canada certainly seems to be straying the furthest from their typical look in international play.
The four players modeling the jerseys are Auston Matthews for the USA, Victor Hedman for Sweden, Sebastian Aho for Finland, and of course, Sidney Crosby for Canada. Honestly, we can probably assume that these four men will each be the captains of their respective teams.
The NHL has slowly been drip-feeding us information about this event for months. Back in June, they revealed that Quinn Hughes, Adam Fox, Matthew Tkachuk, Auston Matthews, Charlie McAvoy, and Jack Eichel will be representing Team USA. Granted this announcement feels rather redundant as all of those players seem like such obvious choices for the team that they don't really need to be announced at all.
Of course, this tournament will not mean much to these NHL players in comparison to the Stanley Cup. In fact, McDavid revealed earlier this season that he is still processing his team's game seven loss in the finals last season. As such, if Canada loses the tournament, McDavid probably won't mind that much, as long as he remains healthy and ready for the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2025.
