The New York Islanders are middle of the pack in the NHL's Metropolitan Division, sitting just behind their New York counterparts, the Rangers.
Given how things have gone for them lately, the team has taken some very sharp criticism, especially from former NHL player Paul Bissonnette, who did not hold anything back with his comments about the Islanders' most recent game against the New Jersey Devils.
On Saturday, the Islanders were the first to take the lead during the first period and later extended it to a two-goal advantage in the third period.
But they lost their hold on the game and fell to the Devils in overtime. While the team gained one point in overtime, this was just not enough to prevent Bissonnette from immediately taking to the internet with a series of scathing criticisms regarding the lost lead and poor effort from the team and players alike.
These words by Bissonnette will definitely not go down well with the management of the Islanders.
The General Manager, Lou Lamoriello, and Head Coach Patrick Roy are highly competitive, and neither of them takes any criticism lying low.
It would now be interesting to see how this public criticism helps or hurts the Islanders in what has been a touch-and-go set of matches for them.
To this date, the Islanders have not shown consistency, posting a 4-5-1 mark in their last 10 games.
They now sit four points behind the Rangers and trail the division-leading Devils by seven points.
While none of these deficits are insurmountable, the team will have to change course if it is going to close the gap as the season wears on.
How the Islanders respond to some of the pointed comments from Bissonnette will set the tone for the next few weeks, making their upcoming performances particularly interesting to watch.
