The Washington Capitals are fighting for their lives tonight as they try to avoid going down 3-0 to the New York Rangers. Early in the game, the team got a break when Rangers forward Matt Rempe was given an interference penalty.

The hit was on Capitals defenseman Trevor Van Riemsdyk. It seemed like it was more or less a clean hit and it came just after Van Riemsdyk passed the puck. However, the referees clearly felt that it was late as they were quick to assess him with a minor penalty.

One Rangers fan did note that it could technically be called a penalty, but added that the refs might be picking on Rempe in particular. After all, the Rangers rookie has made a name for himself as playing a hard physical game, and he's already been ejected twice for illegal hits, included one that earned him a four-game suspension.

In a technical sense you could argue it's a penalty, but given how little they call those types of things, you have to wonder if maybe they're treating Matt Rempe differently

Be sure to stay tuned to see how Rempe and the Rangers will respond. They currently hold a 2-1 lead over the Capitals in game three as the game is in first intermission.
