Jacob Trouba, captain of the New York Rangers, will not be fined according to the NHL Player Safety Department. It was deemed his hit was clean on Justin Barron.

Jacob Trouba once again found himself at the center of a controversial play during Tuesday night's game. The New York Rangers captain delivered a hard hit on Montreal Canadiens defenseman Justin Barron along the boards in the third period of the Rangers' 7-2 blowout win. In immediate retaliation, Canadiens blueliner Mike Matheson dropped the gloves with Trouba. The NHL Department of Player Safety has decided not to fine, nor suspend, Jacob Trouba in what they deemed was a clean hit.

Referees opted to not call a penalty on Trouba either. Both players took fighting majors due to the brawl, with an additional 10-minute misconduct going to Mike Matheson. Barron needed assistance off the ice and did not return for the remainder of the game.

Tensions flared between Trouba and Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher after a stoppage in play earlier in the game, setting the tone for a matchup that would have such an incident in it.

Jacob Trouba has a history of supplementary discipline, having been suspended twice for two-game stretches, once in 2017 for a headshot on Ottawa Senators winger Mark Stone while with the Winnipeg Jets, and more recently this past January for elbowing Vegas Golden Knights' Pavel Dorofeyev. The Rangers defenseman has also been fined three times in his career for slashing, high-sticking, and an elbow on Florida Panthers forward Evan Rodrigues during the 2023 Eastern Conference Final.
