The Ottawa Senators kicked off the 2024 off-season with an incredible deal, landing Vezina Trophy winning goaltender Linus Ullmark, with the Sens able to offload Joonas Korpisalo and only give up one first-rounder in the deal. However, their next deal wasn't quite as good, as they moved Jakob Chychrun to the Washington Capitals in a deal that netted them a solid defenseman and a 2026 third-round pick in return, a return that was laughed at by many.
If it couldn't get any worse for the struggling franchise, a new story has emerged, as GM Steve Staios was reportedly at the 2024 NHL Draft bragging about the return he was getting for Chychrun, at one point noting that he had a first and a second round pick in the deal.
Obviously it didn't turn out that way, and the team ended up letting him go for very little in return, so perhaps in the future, Staios will know to keep this type of thing to himself before a deal gets made.
