Recently, the Senators set off a firestorm on social media after having tweeted out a video featuring their star goalie Linus Ullmark chatting with general manager Steve Staios. The especially sharp-eyed might have noticed that there was a stack of papers and a pen on the desk, with big news possibly about to drop in a contract extension.
It wasn't long thereafter that TSN's Darren Dreger confirmed the speculation, announcing that Ullmark had signed a four-year contract extension worth $8.25 million annually. This really wasn't news for many, with rumors floating around about a new deal for Ullmark for quite some time now, and it was only a question of when the news would pop through, just ahead of the team's season opener.
He was then signed to a new deal that will make him the fourth-highest-paid goalie in the league, as well as match the salary cap hit of his old teammate Jeremy Swayman. His performance and reputation speak volumes about him, so it's no surprise to see the Senators lock him down for the next four years.
Ullmark enters his first season with Ottawa, coming over in a trade from the Boston Bruins. The 31-year-old netminder had an incredible 2022-23 season with the Bruins, which culminated in him securing a Vezina Trophy. He ended that season with a 40-6-1 record, pacing the league with a .938 save percentage and a 1.89 goals-against average. He also won a Jennings Trophy along with Swayman for the fewest goals allowed.
A 2012 draft selection of the Buffalo Sabres, Linus Ullmark has compiled quite the career, playing in 247 games, going 138-73-23 and maintaining a .918 save percentage. This new contract will keep him in Ottawa through the 2028-29 season, giving the Senators an anchor in the net for years to come.
