San Jose Sharks GM Rips Into A Scout After Firing Him
The role of a scout in an NHL organization can make or break the future of an organization. Today the San Jose Sharks shockingly fired one of their top scouts. After firing him the team's General Manager Mike Grier publicly called out the scout who was fired.
Sharks General Manger Rips Into His Former Scout After Firing Him
This afternoon it was announced that the San Jose Sharks had fired their Russian scout Igor Eronko. Eronko had been the team's main scout in Russia all season but General Manager Mike Grier was not happy with his commitment to the job.
Igor didn't meet the standard. For whatever reason, he wasn't seeing games and wasn't doing what we were asking of them. So we felt it was best to part ways with him.
Grier and the Sharks new regime have been trying to get the culture right at every level of the organization including the scouting staff. Grier would eventually go into immense detail about who Eronko was fired.
Grier Drags Former Scout For Not Fulfilling His Duties
Mike Grier continued to speak about their now former employee Eronko. He says Eronko received several warnings about not having scouting reports sent in. It was also believed he was not spending proper time in the rinks watching the players in his region.
We gave him several warnings about getting his reports in. Cleaning up his lists. And seeing games. You can't scout or get a good feel of the players if you're not at the rinks. For whatever reason, he was given plenty of notice that he needed to improve in this area, and he didn't.
Beyond being a General Manager of a team being an amateur scout is one of the most prestigious jobs one can have in a front office. When a staff member in one of those coveted roles does not respect and understand this responsibility a team has the right to find someone who will.
The Sharks plan to name a new scout to their Russian region in the coming months. For now, the responsibility will be shared throughout the staff.
