After the free agent window opened on July 1st, the Kraken signed 2024 Stanley Cup champion Brandon Montour to a seven-year contract, which led to Brian Dumoulin being traded to Anaheim in exchange for a draft pick.
According to Travis Lazarczyk of the Portland Press Herald, Dumoulin had approached Seattle's General Manager Ron Francis before the NHL Entry Draft, expressing his desire to join an East Coast team. However, the Kraken initially showed no interest in trading him. The situation changed once Montour was signed, creating an excess of defensemen on Seattle's roster and prompting Dumoulin's trade to Anaheim for a 2026 fourth-round draft pick. This move also helped the Kraken manage their salary cap.
Despite not being traded to his preferred location, Dumoulin is optimistic about joining the Ducks, describing them as a young, up-and-coming team.
Dumoulin, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, set a career-high in goals (6) during his only season with the Kraken after spending ten years with the Pittsburgh Penguins. In Anaheim, he is expected to play a depth role on the blueline, bringing valuable experience to the team. He will join Cam Fowler and Radko Gudas and will contribute to Anaheim's penalty-killing units.
