The Toronto Maple Leafs have been without Auston Matthews for the past few weeks, but now the captain is back, and he's clearly motivated against a top rival as his return game comes against the Boston Bruins.
This season has been a good one for the Toronto Maple Leafs, as the team has managed to thrive despite captain Auston Matthews being absent for over 15 games at this point in time.
On top of that, he's been out since the Christmas break, missing the Maple Leafs' last six games, with the team going 3-3-0 since that point, but now, he's set to make his long-awaited return on Saturday night against the Boston Bruins.
Now, he's addressed his return, stating that he has felt good in the past few days, and is now confident that he's close to 100% after re-aggravating an upper-body injury that he suffered earlier in the season.
"I mean, the last couple of skates, I've felt good. So I've just been making positive progress throughout those and feeling confident day by day."
Unsurprisingly, given the historic pace that he's been on over the past few years, Matthews hates being on the sidelines, and even with the team sitting on top of the Atlantic Division, he's not having any fun watching.
During the season thus far, Toronto's record sits at 24-13-2, giving them a tie with Florida for the lead in the division, and with their off-season pickups paying off big time, the optimism continues to grow in Toronto.
Even without being 100%, Matthews has 11 goals and 23 points in 24 games played, and with Mitch Marner and William Nylander off to incredible starts, if Matthews can hit the ground running, this team is going to be dominant all regular season-long.
