A very nasty Vancouver Canucks defender has just announced his retirement
Alex Edler was known for giving cheap shots and being a very dirty player. He's just signed a one-day contract to retire with the Vancouver Canucks.
Away from the game for over a year after sitting out the 2023-24 season, there was some question about Alexander Edler's future in hockey.
In an announcement via the Vancouver Canucks' website, it was revealed that Edler will sign a one-day contract with the team this October to officially retire as a Canuck. The team will be celebrating Edler's career on Friday, October 11th, just prior to their game against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Edler spoke with gratitude on how thankful he was to conclude his career with the Canucks, the very team that drafted him back in 2004, and a team he has been part of for 15 seasons.
"I am humbled and honoured to officially end my career and retire as a member of the Vancouver Canucks," said Edler. "I consider myself lucky to have started my career with such an outstanding organization, in this amazing city, with the best fans in the NHL. Finishing my NHL career where it all began is something very special for myself and my family."
Now 38, Edler hangs up his skates with 439 points, having scored 104 goals and 335 assists, as well as 733 penalty minutes in 1,030 regular-season games. He added 40 points in 93 playoff games, helping the Canucks advance to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011. They lost to the Boston Bruins in a hotly contested seven-game series, but not before proving themselves to be one of Vancouver's best playoff teams ever.
We would like to take a moment to congratulate Alex Edler on an amazing NHL career, and we wish him the best in his retirement.
