It only gets worse for the Canucks, as news has come to light that Elias Pettersson was involved in a big lawsuit in which he got scammed out of more than $240,000.

According to Derek O'Brien of 'The Hockey News', Vancouver Canucks phenom Elias Pettersson has been victimized in a real estate scam to the tune of nearly $250,000 USD out of his pockets.

The Petterssons were to buy a luxury villa in Danderyd, Sweden worth 26 million SEK, approximately US$2.4 million.

The villa was paid for with a 10 percent down payment which was 240,000 dollars US, and it struck him quite soon, and also his father Torbjorn that it was a false deal.

«It turned out that the house had many flaws that needed to be fixed,» Elias' father Torbjörn Pettersson told the Sundsvalls Tidning newspaper.

Elias Pettersson never got his money back

They sued the broker who sold them the villa and got the mortgage canceled. They didn't get their down payment back.

«The money's gone - just forget about it and move on,» the elder Pettersson said.

The broker in the meantime was sentenced to six years on other fraud charges and their chances of getting their money back now seem remote.

While it goes without saying that at $11.6 million a year, the fraud isn't going to break the bank, a loss is a loss, and it definitely stings.

It also begs the question as to whether such an experience, ongoing these last two years, might have had any effect on his play or his negotiations with the Canucks.

Pure speculation, but hard not to notice Pettersson hasn't resembled himself this season, or for much of last season, for that matter.
