Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom left the game early last night after Bruins' Justin Brazeau crashed into him, and Sheldon Keefe provided a grim update.

Going into Wednesday night's game, the New Jersey Devils had lost four in a row. Head coach Sheldon Keefe, rather unhappy about this, had called out his star players earlier in the week and delivered a rather heated message at practice.

It seemed to get an answer as the Devils clobbered the Boston Bruins 5-1. It came at some cost, though, as goaltender Jacob Markstrom departed with an injury.

Markstrom was injured early in the second after Bruins forward Justin Brazeau ran into him in the crease. He remained in the game before a trainer and teammate Stefan Noesen helped him off.

Sheldon Keefe says Jacob Markstrom will miss some time

After the game, Keefe said Markstrom would be out for a bit, though the goalie was feeling better once the actual game itself was complete.

«We'll take some time before we know the full extent on [Markstrom],» Keefe explained, via New Jersey Hockey Now's James Nichols. «I talked to him, he is in good spirits. He's feeling a lot better than before, so that's positive. He's going to miss some time.»

Of course, Markstrom, acquired in a trade with Calgary during the Stanley Cup Final, has been one of the best additions the Devils have made. After a disastrous season with the Flames, he's bounced back quite well this season.

Markstrom was 21-9-5 with three shutouts and a .912 save percentage heading into the game. He's also 12th in Goals Saved Above Average and 11th in Goals Saved Above Expected, per Evolving Hockey.

As much as the win was needed in New Jersey, losing Markstrom is a disaster. Backup goaltender Jake Allen will now be called upon to step in until Markstrom is well enough to get back in the crease.
