For the past two years, Robin Lehner has been sidelined with a hip injury, and according to all reports, 2024/25 will be the third straight campaign that the veteran goaltender misses due to the injury. However, despite the injury, the 33-year-old still has a duty to turn up to training camp for a mandatory medical exam, but this year, he didn't do that, according to a recent report published by Insider Frank Seravalli.
According to the report, Lehner is required to show up to training camp and undergo a medical exam, even if his future is already determined by the 2022 hip surgery, and after he no-showed, Vegas are now consulting the league about the issue, who are in turn consulting the NHLPA. For two years now, Lehner has been on LTIR for the entire season, and while that opens up cap space for the Golden Knights, getting him off the books would be an even bigger win for the team, and is clearly what they are looking for.
It's unclear if Lehner will ever be able to take the ice again for the Golden Knights or any other team, but this latest development certainly isn't a positive one, so now we will have to wait and see whether the NHLPA set a new precedent for this type of occurrence or if they will back the 33-year old that is clearly in violation of protocol.
