Back in 2020, the Winnipeg Jets selected Swedish forward Daniel Torgersson with the 40th overall pick. Now, almost five years later, the Jets are cutting ties with Torgersson as they have placed him on unconditional waivers so they can terminate his contract.
Additionally, Montreal Canadiens goaltender Cayden Primeau has also been placed on waivers to be sent to the AHL. This move coincides with the Canadiens calling up goaltender Jakub Dobes yesterday.
Torgersson has spent the last three years in Canada with the Manitoba Moose of the AHL and has seen his numbers slowly decline from 20 years old to 22 years old. His best AHL season was in 2022-23 where he scored 11 goals and 20 points in 69 AHL games. He has struggled this season going scoreless through 12 games and not improving like most prospects do.
At the moment, Torgersson's next team is unknown but speculation indicates that it will likely be somewhere in Sweden. As most European players who get their contract terminated in North America do, Torgensson will have options overseas.
At his best, he is a talent that can score at high volume and be somebody that other teams gameplan for. Hopefully, Torgersson can find his stride with his next team and be the best version of himself down the road.
