Andre Bourgeois died of injuries sustained in a violent attack on September 22, according to the court record. His obituary lists the date of his death as September 27.
The Fredericton police say the attack happened early on September 22 outside the Tannery, a park-like setting surrounded by several bars on either side between King and Queen streets. In a release issued one week later, police confirmed two men were attacked, one with critical injuries.
A manslaughter charge was laid against an 18-year-old Junior A hockey player with the Fredericton Red Wings, Tyler Totten, following the passing of Andre Bourgeois several weeks after this late-night dispute in downtown Fredericton.
Three youths were also charged with manslaughter in relation to the beating, two 17-year-olds and one 16-year-old. Because of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, none of the youths can be identified as being confirmed in the Red Wings organization.
James Faulkner, a spokesperson for the Maritime Junior Hockey League, said both the team and the league are cooperating with Fredericton police, adding the matter has nothing to do with hockey. The general manager of the Red Wings, Kyle McAllister, would not comment. People in the hockey world will definitely be keeping a close eye on this case as it continues to develop.
