It hasn't been too long since we saw the Colorado Avalanche defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning in 6 games to become the 2022 Stanley Cup champions. With the victory, Joe Sakic was named the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award at the NHL Draft.
But while the Avalanche have a chance at repeating as Champions, Sakic doesn't have a chance at repeating as the GM of the year as he will no longer be the GM!
In a shocking turn of events, the Colorado Avalanche announced that they have promoted Chris MacFarland to General Manager to replace Joe Sakic.
COL will be promoting Chris MacFarland to GM, with Joe Sakic becoming President of Hockey Operations. The Avalanche wisely chose to keep MacFarland rather than allow him to interview with other teams earlier this season.
Colorado had previously refused MacFarland the ability to interview for a vacant GM job and it appears we now understand why. We have seen this move before in Vegas when they promoted George McPhee to President to keep Kelly McCrimmon as GM.
It is interesting to see this move be made after the draft though as it didn't give MacFarland a chance to put his first stamp on the team.
