BREAKING: NHL Coach Penalized For Hitting A Referee
Touching the referees is always a big no-no in the NHL. When players do so, it is cause for an automatic suspension assuming the contact is intentional and not part of an official breaking up a fight. Tonight we saw a highly unusual situation where the Tampa Bay Lightning were penalized for abuse of officials.
Tampa Bay Lightning Head Coach Penalized For Abuse Of Officials
Instead of a player getting into it with the officials, we saw Tampa Bay Lighting head coach Jon Cooper receive a penalty for abuse off officials after he got into a heated argument with the referees about a previous call. During the altercation, Cooper was waiving his arms around violently, ultimately chopping at one of the referee's arms.
Lightning coach Jon Cooper was GIVING IT to the ref and was handed a bench minor for his troubles 🫣
The referees would have been within their rights to eject Cooper from the game for this incident so the head coach was lucky to get off with just a minor penalty. Cooper has developed a reputation for complaining about officiating over the years, but it typically comes in the form of calm post-game interviews. Perhaps we will see the NHL take a look at this play for potential supplementary discipline for the veteran coach.
As seen on Jon Cooper given a penalty for hitting a referee during tonight's game
