The beloved Leafs winger has been off to a career-best pace this season. Thanks to the fact that his contract is expiring at the end of the year he now appears to be in line for a massive bag from the Maple Leafs. NHL insider Nick Kypreos reported today that the team and player are both reportedly ready to finalize a deal and they hope to put pen to paper before the NHL's all-star break.
According to Kypreos, the deal will likely be for eight years and it will carry an average-annual-value north of 11 million dollars. The final total seems like it will be right around 11.25 million dollars a season.
Nylander's career-best season is one worthy of such a contract but he has not consistently scored at this rate throughout his career. While he is certainly a very, very good player, this is the first season where he's been in serious consideration for top 10 player in the league.
Currently, Nylander is tied at 5th in the NHL in scoring with none other than Connor McDavid as he leads the Leafs with 48 points.
While Nylander's scoring pace this season may be worthy of a cap hit north of 11 million dollars, it remains to be seen whether or not he can maintain this pace. Even if he does so this season, will he be able to replicate it in the future? Perhaps more importantly, will the Leafs find postseason success with yet another 11 million dollar deal on the books? These are questions the Leafs front office has certainly considered during contract negotiations. Hopefully, the answer to both will be, yes.
