In 2024, Cole Caufield is one of the brightest young stars in the NHL, but in his latest interview with Spittin' Chiclets, he's revealed that he wasn't always bound for stardom.

When asked about Team USA's National Team Development Program (NTDP), Caufield reveals that things weren't going well for a while.

I didn't have a point in the camp (Team USA NTDP tryouts), and I was like, well I think I'm gonna go play with my brother. I'm not making this team, there's so many good guys.

It was then however that Caufield told the story of how current New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes campaigned for him and picked him on his team.

He was in the office with John Wroblewski mid-camp and he's like 'we're picking this guy, and it's me. He was then like, this guy? Why? But I think it worked out obviously.

Both guys have gone on to become stars in the NHL

This camp is likely a key factor in Caufield becoming the player he was today, as he ultimately smashed several records with Team USA's NTDP before becoming a first-round pick with the Montreal Canadiens.

It's hard to envision a time where Caufield wasn't going to be a star, but according to him, Hughes played a key role in keeping his hopes of NHL stardom alive, and with 53 goals and 84 points in 123 career games, it's safe to say he's well on his way.
