When you think the Toronto Maple Leafs, the first thing that comes to mind has to be super star Auston Matthews or losing in the playoffs.
The good news is the Leafs have Matthews for two more seasons at $11,640,250 per season. But the bad news with the current salary cap structure and the raise that Matthews is deserving to get the Leafs are going to have to make some adjustments.
Hockey Insider Elliotte Friedman spoke on that Matthews does like to return to his home town Arizona during the off-season, but do you think he will enjoy returning home to a possible rebuilding team?
Elliotte Friedman shared that the Leafs will make it a priority to fit Matthews salary in the new cap what ever it may be by then. Likely $14/15 million plus bonuses.
"I Believe if the Leafs keep going in the right direction Matthews will sign long term in Toronto. Matthews wants to win here."
-Elliotte Friedman
Toronto has treated Matthews right and from all accounts it looks like Matthews is happy and has a lot of close relationships with teammates Mitch Marner, John Tavares, and Morgan Reilly.
