Insider Reveals The Insane Cutter Gauthier Trade That Almost Happened Involving Contending Team's Star Defenseman
The Philadelphia Flyers made a shocking trade recently when they sent former 5th overall pick Cutter Gauthier to the Ducks in exchange for Jamie Drysdale and a second-round pick. Apparently, the team had discussed other deals before coming to this conclusion.
Colorado Avalanche Rejected Trade For Cutter Gauthier
The Flyers apparently had many trade discussions involving Cutter Gauthier. The team wanted to survey all of their options, so they talked to most teams in the NHL, including the Colorado Avalanche.
Friedman on Flyers/Avs/Cutter Gauthier (32TP): «I think Philly did ask about Bowen Byram and I just think Colorado wasn't going thereI suspect Colorado's answer was we are not doing this 1-for-1, it's got to be more than Gauthier for Byram» The initial ask seemed to be Gauthier for Avalanche defenseman Bowen Byram, one-for-one. The Avalanche clearly rejected the offer. This is somewhat interesting as Byram certainly has a lot of upside, but he has been injured so frequently already in his young NHL career that it seems as though he may never be capable of playing a full 82-game season.
Flyers Settle For Gauthier Trade With Anaheim Ducks
Clearly, the Flyers were looking for help on defense as they ultimately traded Gauthier to the Ducks in exchange for Jamie Drysdale and a 2nd round pick. Drysdale is a big step down from Byram, but assuming he can stay healthy, he may very well be the more valuable long-term option.
That being said, Gauthier is probably the better player of the two, indicated by the fact that the Ducks had to give up a second-round pick as part of the trade. However, the Ducks will probably be okay with that as they were never going to get a prospect even close to Gauthier's skill level with that pick.
