After his first career 100-point season and a red-hot start to 2023-24, it comes as no surprise that Vancouver want to lock up their young star, but where do contract talks between the two sides stand?
No improvement on contract situation in Vancouver?
According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, despite the red-hot start of the Canucks in 2023-24, Elias Pettersson has made it clear to the Canucks that he's not yet ready to talk about a contract.
"He has made it very clear he's not yet ready to talk contract with Vancouver."
We've heard since this past summer that Pettersson wants to win, and even with their hot start to the year, it appears as though he's going to wait until the results of this season pan out before he engages with the team or any other on contract talks.
A superstar is emerging in Vancouver
While Quin Hughes, J.T. Miller and others are having great years in Vancouver, Pettersson has long been the biggest star of this team, and if he doesn't want to come back it would be a major blow to the team.
After 102 points a season ago, Pettersson has tallied 17 goals and 48 points in 39 games this season, and if he does hit the market this summer, he'll be a prize acquisition for some team around the league, so the Canucks will be hoping his stance changes sometime soon.
