What was a mostly minor announcement today by the Edmonton Oilers is raising some questions, including whether there's a double standard. The issue is the hiring of a former agent who has dealt with Edmonton on numerous occasions, in the role of CEO of Hockey Operations.

Jeff Jackson

Jeff Jackson was an agent with the Wasserman agency before joining the Oilers. He served as the representative free agent Connor Brown, who signed in Edmonton on July 1st to a one-year, bonus-heavy contract. Jackson was also the agent for Connor McDavid, who has since announced he will remain with the Wasserman agency, but will be represented by a different agent. Journalist Andrew Berkshire is questioning why this isn't being investigated by the NHLPA when it recently reviewed Kyle Dubas.

"Not saying there was anything untoward, but if Kyle Dubas got investigated for being repped by Wasserman, you'd think there might be an investigation into Connor Brown at league min when his agent was clearly in negotiations to join the Oilers already." - Andrew Berkshire

Kyle Dubas

What does any of this have to do with Pittsburgh President and GM Kyle Dubas? The NHLPA said it would investigate Dubas back in May after it was learned he is a client of the Wasserman agency, which also represents Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews. There were questions raised over whether there was a conflict of interest there. However, nothing has been said about the hiring of Jackson by Edmonton. Whether there is something fishy here or not, Berkshire does have a point. A review shouldn't be out of the question.
