The NHL players were scheduled to be in Beijing, China for the 2022 Olympic Games right now, but due to COVID and some other logistical nightmares that didn't come to be the case. NHL players like Brad Marchand echoed their displeasure with the decision, fans were disappointed and owners were overjoyed.
The NHL has long had issues with the Olympics due to the lack of money the tournament generates for the league, and not to mention the hesitation some franchises have had due to injury. This concern arose after Dominik Hasek suffered an abductor tear, which ended his NHL season, 10 minutes into the 2006 Olympics.
According to Pierre LeBrun the NHL and NHLPA have come to an agreement on hosting a best on best tournament in 2024.
As mentioned on TSN's Insider Trading, NHL/NHLPA met last week to start planning on 2024 World Cup of Hockey. Most intriguing is the «strong possibility» according to sources that the event would be played in February 2024, mid-season instead of the normal September time slot.
The last World Cup of Hockey was held in 2016 and featured 8 teams (Canada, United States, Finland, Russia, Czech Republic, Sweden, Europe and Team North America - Under 24).
Team Canada won the tournament after defeating Team Europe 2 games to 0 in the Tournament Finals.
