When the NHL shut down early for the holiday freeze to help manage COVID case counts the idea was that the league would reopen it's doors December 27th with the return to play, but according to at least one source that idea might not come to fruition.
According to this source it is sound more and more likely that the NHL will continue to postpone games through January 1st and return with the Minnesota Wild versus St. Louis Blues in the Winter Classic.
Now that players have committed to skipping the Olympics the league has more wiggle room and could make this more feasible, but moving a game like the Winter Classic will not be possible so expect the league to return to action for that game with more policies and protocols in place.
