Carolina Hurricanes forward Nino Niederreiter will have a hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety after slashing Washington Capitals forward, Axel Jonsson-Fjallby. The incident occurred during the first period of the last night's 4-3 Capitals shoot-out win over the Hurricanes.
After being nailed with a check near the Capitals' bench by Capitals' forward Tom Wilson, Niederreiter was almost checked into the Capitals bench. During the play Niederreiter's stick got caught up with Capitals' player Garnet Hathaway, while Niederreiter was clearly frustrated getting his stick back and upset by the hit, he then slashed Capitals' Jonsson-Fjallby in the side of the head.
Capitals' head coach, Peter Laviolette was furious with the incident. Niederreiter has no prior offenses, this was just a moment of misjudgment.
