Following the news of Peter Laviolette's hiring in New York today, his salary for the next three years was also released. While coaches' salaries usually aren't a hot topic of conversation, Laviolette's salary is causing quite the uproar in the hockey world.
Laviolette Gets Paid
According to the trusted NHL contract database CapFriendly, Peter Laviolette will be making $4.9 million for the next three years as the head coach of the New York Rangers. At first glance, this doesn't seem insane, until you realize that this makes him the second highest-paid head coach in the NHL, only behind L.A.'s Todd McLellan.

Laviolette's experience as an NHL coach was clearly valued by New Yor, and he got paid big time as a result.
Are Coaches Paid Too Much?
Some fans have begun to ask questions regarding coaches' salaries, and whether or not they're getting too high. With Laviolette's salary coming in at just under $5 million a year, he's making more than most players do.
Especially in a job where people are so regularly cycled out, paying coaches big salaries makes very little sense.
If a team decides to fire a coach, they will still have to pay him the full amount of his contract, which makes these big money deals all the more dangerous for teams.
