Marc Crawford is a very decorated Head Coach all over the world, but now he has left his job in Switzerland, citing mental health issues as the reason.
After winning a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 1996, Marc Crawford would go on to become one of the most decorated Head Coaches in NHL history, leading the Vancouver Canucks, Los Angeles Kings, and Ottawa Senators among others, coaching in 1,169 games over his career.
In that time, Crawford would post a record of 556-431-103-79, and since he departed from the NHL he has headed overseas, leading the ZSC Lions in the National League in Switzerland.
A year ago, he led the team to the Swiss Championship, the second time he has done so in his career, but now, the 63-year-old has resigned from his role, citing mental health issues as the reason for his departure.
«It is with sincere gratitude and a lot of humility, that I announce that I am resigning immediately as the Head Coach of the ZSC Lions. For the last several months, I have been investing in intensive therapy with the hope of understanding the depths of my mental health. This process has proven to be both challenging and revealing to me as a coach, a husband, a father, and an expecting grandfather, and finally as a person.»
Deservedly so, Crawford has received immense support from those overseas and in North America, and while it's never good to see a coach lose his role and his livelihood, it's great to see him taking care of his mental health.
There's a lot of great and some bad throughout his career of Crawford, but ultimately he's had immense success overseas, internationally for Canada and in the NHL, so we hope that one day we can see him behind the bench once more after departing his role with the ZSC Lions.
