The Chicago Blackhawks did everything right to start last season. They brought in a Vezina winning goaltender, for nothing, they got their captain Jonathan Toews back after missing a season with injury, and at the NHL entry draft he traded for a Norris calibre defenceman in Seth Jones.

The Blackhawks still had a lot of nice pieces and on paper you would have thought they would have atleast contended for a playoff spot, but that was definitely not the case. The Blackhawks went in a completely new direction under new general manager Kyle Davidson, and now they are trying to unload every asset they have that could possibly win them a game.

What makes matters worse for defenceman Seth Jones is, when he was traded to the Blackhawks, he signed a massive contract extension for 8 years wiwth a $9,500,000 cap hit.

Seth Jones signed a 8 year / $76,000,000 contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, including a $40,250,000 signing bonus, $76,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $9,500,000. In 2022-23, Jones will earn a base salary of $750,000 and a signing bonus of $9,250,000, while carrying a cap hit of $9,500,000.

According to Scott Power of The Athletic, this price tag is just too high for teams to trade for.

Despite playing on a poor team last season, Jones was still able to put up some great numbers, scoring 51 points.

If Davidson really wants to move Seth Jones, he might have to think about adding in a pick or prospect, which would definitely hurt the speed of a rebuild, or consider retaining salary, which would hurt just as much as he still has the full 8 years on his deal remaining.

There is even a report that at the NHL draft, the Blackhawks tried to give Seth Jones to the Ottawa Senators, who actually are in need for a top pairing right handed defenceman, for NOTHING and they declined.
