RUMOR: Boston Bruins Closing In On Deal For Top Canadiens Forward
According to an insider, the Montreal Canadiens are deep in trade talks for one of their top players with none other than their biggest rivals, the Boston Bruins.
Major Rumor: Habs to Trade Top Player to Rival?
The Montreal Canadiens likely won't make the playoffs this year, despite great efforts in the last few games against top teams like the Oilers and Avalanche.
Kent Hughes, the Habs' general manager, has always made interesting moves with his assets, and it could happen once again this year.
One of the Canadiens' top players, Sean Monahan, could be on the trade market.
Eklund said that the Boston Bruins talked with the Habs about him:
"There is something to this one. Others are reporting as well, but the Boston Bruins have had serious, albeit preliminary talk, with the Montreal Canadiens regarding Sean Monahan.yes, the two most hated rivals in the sport discussing a trade. Is nothing sacred?"
Taking a Look at Sean Monahan's Value
If the Habs decide to trade him, they could get an interesting return. His great skills, experience, and leadership, added to his cap-friendly contract of $2 million AAV ending this year, could play an important role with a team looking to make a splash in the playoffs.
However, Eklund added that Monahan's health issues in recent years, even if he remained healthy this season, will influence his value. He also shared that the Kings, Panthers, Red Wings, and Devils could be interested in the veteran.
"Unfortunately for Montreal, Sean's on-and-off health issues have played a part in the price tag being much lower than it should be given the unquestionable skill set. The Kings, Panthers, Red Wings, and Devils are all also keeping close tabs."
Hughes confirmed in a recent press conference that Monahan could be traded before March 8th, but the possibility to sign a contract ahead of the deadline remains.
