The Detroit Red Wings haven't had the breakout they expected this season. After 19 games, Steve Yzerman's team is currently at the 6th rank in the Atlantic Division with an 8-9-2 record, only one point over the Ottawa Senators, and two over the Montreal Canadiens.
In breaking news, Elliotte Friedman announced that they made a roster move on Saturday afternoon, only hours before their game against the Boston Bruins.
The insider revealed that Tim Gettinger has been placed on waivers.
Here's what he posted on X:
Gettinger, 26, was placed on the injury reserve with an undisclosed injury before the start of the season.
Drafted 141st overall by the New York Rangers in 2016, the forward scored one point in 16 NHL games, spending most of his time in the AHL. Last season, he tallied 25 points, including 12 goals, with the Grand Rapids Griffins.
The Red Wings are definitely taking a risk with that decision. Gettinger is likely to interest some teams looking to add a big, talented player to their forward group.
Currently signed to a one-year contract valued at $775,000, many teams scuffed under the salary cap could be tempted to grab him.
We can imagine a team like the Montreal Canadiens interested in acquiring him to add some energy to their lineup, or even the Toronto Maple Leafs, who always look for skilled players with size.
However, according to scouting reports, the player still needs to find a way to use his size to his advantage in order to reach his full potential and become a full-time NHLer.
His fate will be revealed in 24 hours. Stay tuned as we report the latest updates regarding the NHL waiver wire.
