Former NHL player turned homeless Stephen Peat passes away
Stephen Peat was once a great enforcer for the Washington Capitals, but his life took a sad turn when he became homeless. He has sadly passed away.
The hockey community is mourning today following the loss of former Washington Capitals forward, Stephen Peat, who has sadly passed away at the age of 44. The news was shared by the NHL Alumni on their X account, formerly Twitter, with the heartbreaking update that Peat had been involved in an accident nearly two weeks ago. Despite efforts to help him recover, his injuries were very serious, and the world sadly lost him today.
"The NHL Alumni Association is heartbroken to learn that Stephen Peat has passed away from his injuries after a tragic accident just over two weeks ago. He was only 44 years old.
In the wake of this tragic accident, Stephen will be helping to save numerous lives through organ donation.
We send our deepest condolences to Stephen's family, friends, and former teammates during this difficult time." The NHL Alumni said.
Peat was drafted in the second round in 1998 by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (now Anaheim Ducks), but never suited up for them and was dealt to the Washington Capitals just two years later.
The Princeton, British Columbia native appeared in 130 games in the National Hockey League, all with the Capitals, where he had ten points (eight goals, two assists), 234 penalty minutes and was a minus-16.
The thoughts of everyone here at Blade of Steel are with Peat's family and friends at this difficult time. Stephen Peat was known for his toughness on the ice, especially during his time with the Washington Capitals in the early 2000s. He was a true NHL enforcer. His tough role made him a fan favorite, and his fearless playing style left a major impact on the rest of the league.
Off the ice, Stephen Peat faced some serious personal battles, including struggles with mental health and addiction, which he openly spoke about in later years. He even revealed that he was homeless, living inside his van in parking lots.
His tragic passing has saddened not only Capitals fans but the hockey community as a whole, as tributes pour in from former teammates, fans, and those who loved watching his courage both on and off the ice.
Rest in peace Stephen. Have a good fight up there for all of us.
