Gary Bettman blocking Milan Lucic from continuing his NHL career
Gary Bettman seems to have put a stop to Milan Lucic's playing career, as there does not appear to be any indication he will green light his return to the NHL.
Milan Lucic was in New Jersey this summer training so that he could get in shape and hopefully secure an NHL contract.
However, Milan Lucic is currently ineligible to return to the NHL following his arrest in Boston last November. He was charged with two crimes. Lucic pleaded not guilty and all charges were then dropped in February 2024 when his wife used the marital privilege act and declined to testify.
Milan Lucic ended up taking an indefinite leave of absence from his NHL club after he was arrested and ultimately chose never to return to them. When his contract expired on June 30th, he became an unrestricted free agent (UFA) and has been waiting to sign with a team ever since.
Commissioner of the NHL Gary Bettman has to approve Milan Lucic's return to the league, and until he does that, Lucic cannot play. It doesn't appear that Bettman has any plans to do that, which likely means this is the end for Lucic's career. Lucic has also entered the NHLPA Player Assistance program.
As more information is revealed, more details will be provided.
