But just two days before he and his family were supposed to make the move to Scotland, came the bombshell, the cancellation of Stefan Steen's contract.
Why? Stefan and wife Emma are expecting a baby. That is, in itself, wonderful news, except to the Dundee Stars since they didn't want to have "too many players with upcoming family commitments."
Flashback to late July, and Stefan and Emma are roughly a month away from welcoming their first child. Steen had planned to wait until after the baby was born to decide on his next career move after finishing a three-year stint with the Vienna Capitals. But those plans took a sharp turn on July 28 when Dundee Stars' coach and sporting director Marc LeFebvre reached out. Unlike most of the bigger more lucrative European leagues, EIHL is known for its charm, where players can often be found sharing apartments and sometimes even cars just to keep the costs as affordable as possible.
Long story short, Steen never got to play for the team, and he has decided to move to different things, taking up coaching. He hopes this is a lesson learned to all those out there who want to make it big, that obstacles will come in the way, but you need to fight through it and sometimes pivot to a different path.
Family comes first for Steen, no matter what.
