Pittsburgh Penguins officially cancel their game versus Detroit due to off-ice concerns
The Pittsburgh Penguins are officially canceling their pre-season matchup against the Detroit Red Wings after their team plane suffered a mechanical issue.
In a freak event, the Detroit Red Wings will not have an opponent tonight as the Pittsburgh Penguins, their scheduled opponent, were unable to get their team plane off the ground leading to them being stranded.
The Penguins released the following statement on the matter earlier this hour.
The Pittsburgh Penguins regret that we were not able to travel to Detroit this afternoon as planned for our game against the Red Wings. Continued mechanical issues with our team plane were not able to be rectified and despite great effort, there was no method to travel to Detroit safely.
We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused to all fans, media, officials and the Red Wings who were already at Little Caesars Arena.
While this has disappointed fans who were supposed to attend tonight's game, it is better for the Penguins to have these kinds of airplane issues on the ground rather than in the air.
Hopefully, before the season starts, the Penguins can fix their team plane as they will be using it all throughout the year. Thankfully, the Penguins made the smart decision to not go into the air to avoid any further tragedy.
The Penguins next game is scheduled for tomorrow against Ottawa and it is unknown if that game will take place or not as it is supposed to be an Ottawa home game. The Red Wings will face the Penguins on October 1 for one of their final preseason games.
