Outside of countries like Canada, Finland, and Russia, hockey is still a very niche sport.
Even in the United States, most average sports fans pay very little attention to the NHL or hockey in general.
As such, when tragedy strikes the community, it is felt around the world.
We have seen this time and time again in recent years with tragedies such as the passing of former Penguins forward Adam Johnson just over a year ago.
That tragic event was felt around the world and had repercussions for many leagues and players as they took steps to prevent another incident from happening.
Today we saw another tragedy as a report out of Greece confirmed that a young goaltender by the name of Dimitris Skotis has passed away.
Skotis played in the Athens Ice Hockey League, a league that serves the famous Greek city.
This year was his first in the league and he got into 8 games split among three different clubs, posting a combined record of 3-5-0.
The House of Hockey family would like to send our deepest condolences to Dimitris "Jimmy" Skotis's family, friends, and the entire Greek hockey community.
We know that hockey must be a very niche sport in Greece, so the community is likely very small.
As such, almost every player and fan in the country had a good chance of knowing him, so the pain is surely felt throughout the country, especially in Athens where he played.
Rest in peace, Dimitris.
