Sidney Crosby opened up on Alex Ovechkin's quest to beat Wayne Gretzky's goal record in a recent interview.

With the 2024-25 NHL season well underway, hockey fans all around the globe are following their favorite teams, while keeping an eye on Alexander Ovechkin, who could beat Wayne Gretzky's goal record this season.

Ovi and the Caps are off the a great start this season. With 16 points, including eight goals, the captain is now 34 goals away from breaking the all-time goal record. It's a privilege for us to be able to watch him perform at a high level even at 39 years old.

Washington, with a 9-4-0 record, is currently third in the Metropolitan Division. The team has four more points than Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins, but the on-ice rivalry remains.

Last night, the Penguins managed to beat the Caps 4-2 and stopped Ovechkin's point streak to five games.

After the game, Ovi's rival Sidney Crosby opened up on his quest to beat Gretzky's record, saying he hopes that he gets it, and believes it's only a matter of time before he scores his 895th NHL goal:

If Ovi manages to maintain his current rhythm, we could very well see him break the record before the end of the season.

It's great to see the former rivals respecting each other despite all they went through in their careers. Crosby and Ovi are two of the best players in NHL history, and they both had a massive impact on the sport since they came into the league.

Fans will get another chance to watch them play against each other on January 18th, when the Penguins visit the Capitals in Washington.
