It is with a great deal of sadness that the NHL Alumni Association has to announce that former NHL player Mike Meeker died, aged 66.
Mike Meeker, who played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, was one of those rare athletes who reached the pinnacle of hockey. A 25th overall draft pick in 1978, his time in the league lasted only four games, but his reach went so much farther than just on the ice.
Aside from his time in the NHL, Mike Meeker also played in the NCAA, OHL, AHL, and Sweden throughout his career, but his true legacy will be off the rink as he became a mentor, coach, and dedicated volunteer in his community.
Recognized for his commitment to young athletes, the impact that Mike Meeker had on those around him was unbelievable. He was a well-liked character, and his presence will be remembered for years to come.
We would like to extend our most profound and heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends, and all those who were privileged enough to have known Mike Meeker. He will be sorely missed and a portion of the hockey world has been lost as he has left a fingerprint in his community. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.
