TSN On The Verge of Being Sold According to New Rumor
A new report suggests that the giant Canadian sports media TSN could be on the verge of being sold.
For the past years, Bell Media has been making several cuts across its assets, shutting down radio stations and firing thousands of employees.
It seems the company is now looking to part ways with TSN, as reported by Jonah Sigel.
In a recent paper, he revealed that no buyers have been identified yet, but considering the challenges that are facing the channel in the current precarious state of sports media, such as increasing fees and declining viewership, would make TSN's sale logical.
Here's what Sigel wrote:
"While no potential buyers have been publicly identified for TSN, several factors make this move logical. TSN, despite its strong brand recognition, faces increasing challenges in the current media landscape.
Rights fees continue to escalate while traditional subscription revenues decline. The NHL national rights loss to Rogers in 2013 marked a significant shift, and while TSN has maintained regional rights and other properties, the economics of sports broadcasting have fundamentally changed.
This potential sale could reshape the entire Canadian sports media landscape, particularly as streaming services increasingly compete for sports rights. TSN's current portfolio, including CFL, FIFA, and regional NHL rights, could be attractive to multiple buyers, including streaming platforms looking to expand their live sports offerings."
After selling their parts in the MLSE (Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment) ownership group, it seems Bell Media is on its way from cutting ties with all things to do with sports.
If TSN were to be sold, it would be a drastic change in the Canadian media landscape, but we can't ignore the fact that the change has already been made and that the transaction would be the result of those changes.
With Amazon Prime and other streaming services fighting for the broadcasting rights to multiple sports, it's harder for traditional TV to keep up.
It wouldn't be surprising to learn that a company like Amazon would be interested in buying the channel to offer more sports content to their subscribers.
