It was announced today that Mark Wells, a member of the 1980 'Miracle on Ice' USA hockey team, passed away at 66 years old.
It is no debate that the most iconic hockey team in the history of the Olympics is the 1980 Team USA hockey team dubbed the 'Miracle on Ice'. Composed of a bunch of college hockey players, the team went on to win the Gold Medal beating out the powerhouse USSR team at the height of the Cold War.
Today, the hockey community received a tragic announcement as Mark Wells, a member of that 1980 Olympic team, passed away at 66 years old.
It is with profound sadness that the 1980 Miracle Hockey Team announces the passing of our teammate and brother, Mark Wells.
While there aren't many details at this time, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.
RIP #15
Wells was a draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens in the 1977 draft but never made the NHL. Just two years after the legendary Miracle on Ice, Wells retired from professional hockey.
We at House of Hockey send our condolences to Wells' loved ones and wish them all the best as they go through this trying time.
