Back in 2022, the Calgary Flames seemed to be a team on the rise that could compete for the Stanley Cup very soon. However, they lost some star power as the late Johnny Gaudreau left for Columbus in free agency and Matthew Tkachuk also requested a trade being sent to Florida for Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, and more pieces.
Since this offseason, the Flames have failed to make the playoffs two years in a row and are heading toward a rebuild for the foreseeable future. Because of this, GM Craig Conroy is reportedly shopping the two main pieces from the Matthew Tkachuk trade, Huberdeau and Weegar.
Additionally, the Flames are also looking to move defenseman Rasmus Andersson who has been a pivotal part of their blue line for the majority of his NHL career. With these three players on the market, the Flames could receive a haul of prospects and picks that can help them become as competitive as possible for when their rebuild ends.
Huberdeau is being paid $10.5 million for the next seven years which will be difficult for any team to stomach but if the Flames were willing to retain a bit and a team were to have a perfect spot for Huberdeau, then he could bounce back to his form with Florida.
Weegar is being paid $6.25 million for the next seven years as well which is a lot more manageable for most NHL teams as Weegar has certainly been worth his cap hit thus far.
Finally, Andersson is being paid $4.55 million for this year and the next. He is by far the most valuable among the three in terms of trade value as he is much better than the dollar amount he is being paid and could help a team for two playoff runs.
