On the precipice of the biggest day for the NHL waiver wire, with final NHL rosters due on Monday at 5 PM, the New York Islanders made a big decision on a forward who has another 6 years left on their contract, Pierre Engvall.

Pierre Engvall, the former Toronto Maple Leafs winger, was placed on waivers in year 2 of a lengthy 7-year contract by the New York Islanders after a disappointing season.

In the 2023-2024 NHL season, Engvall had just 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points in 74 games. Injuries held Engvall back slightly but the Islanders had played Engvall in the top six, hoping to spark his offense while playing with franchise center Mat Barzal. This production while playing with higher-end talent just didn't match up.

Engvall has spent the majority of his career in Toronto with the Maple Leafs. In 226 career games with the Leafs, Engvall had 42 goals and 41 assists for 83 points. He was traded during the 2023 season to the Islanders, where he scored 5 goals and 4 assists for 9 points in 18 games, which is why the Islanders rewarded him with a 7-year, $21 million contract.

Since then, he has struggled with the Islanders and GM Lou Lamoriello stated that Engvall has lost his spot with the team.

We will now wait and see if Engvall gets claimed tomorrow of if he will head to the AHL.
