Last season, no one took the NHL by storm better than Matt Rempe of the New York Rangers, with the towering young forward fighting any and all comers, including some of the most experienced enforcers in the NHL. However, in 2024/25 he hasn't been on the ice as much for the red-hot New York Rangers, and with the idea of getting him some more ice time, the team has now demoted him to the AHL's Hartford Wolfpack.
In just two games this season, Rempe is yet to get on the scoreboard, and with the Rangers flying high without needing the physical presence of the 6-foot-7 Rempe, this is likely the best move for the team to make.
In games against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens among others, there's no doubt that Rempe could get recalled and find himself back in the lineup, and if he can improve his game and make it more well rounded in the AHL, it gives him a much better opportunity to become an everyday player. For now, however, Rempe just can't find his way into a loaded Rangers team, and with the fighting side of his game becoming less and less important in today's NHL, he's a luxury that's just not needed.
If handled correctly, this could catapult Rempe from being just a solid, fighting forward into a genuine force on the fourth line, with Rempe's positive attitude, he's going to try his best and improve his overall game, so keep an eye on a return to the NHL later in the season for a hopefully much improved Rempe.
