NY Post reporter Mollie Walker revealed that the Rangers netminder could be looking for a deal with an AAV in the 12 million dollar range. Next season will be the final on his current deal with the team, which comes with a cap hit of 5.67 million dollars. This would thus be more than double what he currently makes against the cap.
Investing so much money in a goaltender is always risky. Just look at the Canadiens with Carey Price. However, Shesterkin may be one of those rare cases were he is worth it. Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice compared him to the great Jose Theodore after their hard-fought Eastern Conference finals against the Rangers.
Many Rangers fans themselves think that Shesterkin is worth every penny. Most would probably be happy with the team extending Shesterkin, even if it means making him the highest paid goaltender in the league. Luckily, they have the ability to do that thanks to some other team-friendly deals they have.
Shesterkin was be far the best player on the team in the playoffs this year as well. He could not have performed much better, consistently getting the team wins even when they were outplayed by their opponents.
