Rangers reporter reveals shocking ask from Igor Shesterkin's next contract
New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin is on an expiring contract next season and he is reportedly asking for a massive raise on his next deal.
NY Post reporter Mollie Walker revealed that the Rangers netminder could be looking for a deal with an AAV in the 12 million dollar range. Next season will be the final on his current deal with the team, which comes with a cap hit of 5.67 million dollars. This would thus be more than double what he currently makes against the cap.
Mollie Walker of the NY Post has claimed in her recent article, that goaltender Igor Shesterkin could be looking for $12M AAV on his next contract.
Investing so much money in a goaltender is always risky. Just look at the Canadiens with Carey Price. However, Shesterkin may be one of those rare cases were he is worth it. Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice compared him to the great Jose Theodore after their hard-fought Eastern Conference finals against the Rangers.
"I haven't seen a series by a goaltender like that since José Théodore in 2002."
Paul Maurice says that Igor Shesterkin was "brilliant" in this series:
Many Rangers fans themselves think that Shesterkin is worth every penny. Most would probably be happy with the team extending Shesterkin, even if it means making him the highest paid goaltender in the league. Luckily, they have the ability to do that thanks to some other team-friendly deals they have.
The Rangers should make Igor Shesterkin the highest paid goalie in the league. They should also reward Alexi Lafreniere with a long term deal. What a bargain Vincent Trocheck's deal turned out to be for NYR after his incredible season and playoffs. #NYR Shesterkin was be far the best player on the team in the playoffs this year as well. He could not have performed much better, consistently getting the team wins even when they were outplayed by their opponents.
Igor Shesterkin gave everything in this playoff run ...
- Faced 524 shots in 16 games
- .926 save-percentage
- Rangers out-shot in 13 of 16 games in playoffs
Never stopped competing 🔥
All this is to say that Shesterkin deserves to be the highest paid goalie in the league. However, the team around him will have to play better if they want to win a Stanley Cup.
