MacEwen, 28, has appeared in 19 games for the Senators this season. He has 2 goals and 3 points in that span and has a rating of +1.
Last season he had a very similar stat line putting up 3 points in 30 games for the Sens while averaging under 7 minutes of ice time per game.
Clearly, the Senators were not using the forward in a big way, practically relegating him to enforcer status.
Now it appears as though his time in the NHL could be coming to an end. His career high in points is a measly 10, which came in the 2022-23 season where he played 56 games split between the Kings and Flyers.
He has appeared in just under 60 fights in his NHL career but as enforcers become less and less impactful and common in the league, that skill set is no longer very desirable.
We may very well see him carry on his career in the AHL being a tough guy, but we may never see him in the league again, especially as the Senators struggle.
Ottawa needs to put out the best 12 forwards they can every night to give themselves a chance to win games, and MacEwen is not one of them. Could he get interest from other teams? Perhaps, but most organizations already have at least one player of a similar style either on the NHL roster or with their AHL team. As such, we may very well have already seen MacEwen's last career NHL contest.
