The Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving spoke out about Auston Matthews' trip to Germany in a recent health update.

When Auston Matthews was placed on the Injury Reserve with a day-to-day status, fans never thought the captain would miss over three weeks of action.

Concerns grew even bigger when reports confirmed that Matthews would travel to Germany to get treatment.

The Leafs' General Manager Brad Treliving was asked to share details about the situation, which he did in an interview with The Athletic.

He revealed that Matthews has been bothered for a bit by that issue and that with the Leafs' light schedule, it was a good time for him to step back and take the time to heal at 100%.

In Treliving's words:

"It's bugged him for a bit. With time, it'll get behind him. We looked at the schedule. We had like three games over two and a half weeks."

"As much as it was to go over there to get treatment for what he was dealing with, it was also like you take the car in sometimes because you need to get the oil changed," Treliving said. "But when you're getting the oil changed, let's rotate the tires, let's check the brakes, let's do everything. That's really what this was."

With Max Pacioretty, Matthew Knies, David Kampf, Max Domi, and Calle Jarnkrok all on the Injury Reserve, fans are eager to see Matthews come back in the lineup.

Fortunately, Matthews skated yesterday and indicated that he could return soon to help his team:

"Today was a good day to get back on the ice," he said Saturday. "It's been probably over a week since I've been on the ice, so we will take day-to-day, continue to try to progress in the ice, and see how this week looks and feels. Obviously, I want to get out there. Tomorrow [is] not realistic but Wednesday [is] possible, but we will just see how the week goes."

The Leafs are off to face the Utah Hockey Club tonight, and then, will prepare to face two of their biggest division rivals: the Florida Panthers and the Tampa Bay Lightning.
