The Carolina Hurricanes picked up one point in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday, Nov. 23. Jack Roslovic marked his return to his hometown with a goal, his first for Carolina since joining the Hurricanes this summer.
While the game had its moments, the primary concern came during overtime when Hurricanes' goalie Pyotr Kochetkov sustained a significant head injury.
In a footrace behind the net, it appeared that Sean Walker clipped Kochetkov's head in an attempt to contain Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski. The collision left Kochetkov down on the ice for an extended period.
Hurricanes trainer Doug Bennett attended to Kochetkov, who did manage to get to his feet with the help of Bennett and Brent Burns, appearing to still be shaken.
Spencer Martin took over in net, playing out the rest of the game and the shootout. Sean Monahan's shootout goal won it for Columbus, the lone conversion in six combined attempts.
The Hurricanes next play the Dallas Stars on Monday at Lenovo Center after being off on Sunday. An update on Kochetkov's status is forthcoming, and those will be passed along when available.
This injury piles onto Carolina's goaltending concerns as Frederik Andersen was already set to miss 8-12 weeks following knee surgery.
The team will probably recall Yaniv Perets from the Chicago Wolves to add some depth. However, the loss of Kochetkov for any period of time could be pretty significant, thereby making it hard for Carolina to readjust its goaltending strategy in the short run.
It is still hoped that Kochetkov's injury was not serious because the loss of him would be a huge blow to the team that already has limited options in the net position.
